Did You Know Oscars Edition: Scarlett Johansson Was a Recast in the Movie ‘Her’

'Her' - Premiere - The 8th Rome Film FestivalOf all the Best Picture nominees for the 86th Academy Awards the movie Her is believed to have the worst chance of winning the awards. It’s pretty obvious that American Hustle, 12 Years a Slave, or Gravity are the movies many believe to be the frontrunners to win the award.

Her is about a lonely writer who falls in love with his newly purchased operating system that’s designed to meet all of his needs. The movie features Joaquin Phoenix as the lead role and Scarlett Johansson as the voice of Samantha – the operating system. Interestingly enough, when the movie first started filming it wasn’t Scarlett who was there recording her voice. Samantha Morton was originally the voice of Samantha. She was present on the set everyday with Phoenix filming the movie. After filming completed, Spike Jonze, the director, began editing the film and felt like something wasn’t right. With Morton’s blessing, he recast the role with Johansson who is the final version of Samantha.

A last minute change that may have meant the difference between an Oscar nomination and oblivion? Tough to tell, but for those have seen the movie – Johansson seems like the right fit for the role.
