Next ‘Bourne’ Movie Pushed to 2016 Release

Premiere Of Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" - Arrivals

Fans of the Bourne movies will have to wait a bit longer than expected to get their next installment of the successful franchise. Universal Pictures announced Wednesday that the Bourne series’ fifth installment has been pushed back to a July 15, 2016 release. That is eleven months after the originally planned August 2015 release date.

In it’s place, the studio will be releasing Straight Outta Compton on Aug. 14, 2015. The N.W.A. biopic recounts the rise and fall of the hip-hop supergroup that was composed of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, Arabian Princeand DJ Yella. N.W.A. gave these rappers their start in the business and is widely considered one of the seminal acts of the gangsta rap and west coast hip hop sub-genres, sometimes credited as the most important group in the history of rap music. Straight Outta Compton stars Ice Cube’s son, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins, and Jason Mitchell.

Justin Lin, best known for reviving the Fast & Furious franchise and directing four of the films, is set to direct the still-untitled Bourne pic. Two-time Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner will reprise his role as Aaron Cross. Renner first joined the series for The Bourne Legacy, the franchise’s fourth film. The 2012, Tony Gilroy-directed installment went on to gross $276 million worldwide.

2015 is a jam-packed year of blockbusters for Universal.  Fast & Furious 7 (April 10), Jurassic World (June 12), and Ted 2 (June 26) will all be released in 2015. Bourne’s switch to 2016 makes it the first major summer release for the studio.
